2022 WES Service Learning Day

WES Service Learning Day - COMING SOON - 11-21-2022

What is our Service Learning Day all about?

Students in grades K-5 will participate in Wheatland’s 2022 Service Learning Day that will be held on Monday, November 21. Each grade level will have the opportunity to “provide service” to 2-3 organizations throughout Andover and the surrounding communities.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is focusing on making cards and door decorations for an area nursing home, as well as for children in need. Kindergarten students will also be assembling “birthdays in a bag” to be given to a local food bank.

First Grade

First grade is focusing on making dog toys for shelter dogs and fleece tie blankets for children in foster care.

Second Grade

Second grade is focusing on making dog toys for shelter pets and helping declutter our outdoor classroom.

Third Grade

Third grade is focusing on making fleece tie blankets for foster children and we are collecting book donations for Prairie Creek classrooms. These will replace damaged books lost during the tornado.

Fourth Grade

Fourth grade is focusing on helping “weed” the outdoor classroom and color holiday pictures to hang on resident’s doors at a local nursing home. Students will also help with various projects for The Treehouse of Wichita. The Treehouse provides services for mothers and newborns and students will help assemble intake packets, sort and package items, and cut out baby bucks.

Fifth Grade

Fifth grade will be going out and doing service learning field trips. As groups, they will help clean up City of Andover parks, have social time at the Andover Court nursing home, and deliver donated books to Prairie Creek Elementary in Andover.

All School

All WES students will participate in the Hunger Challenge facilitated by Heaven Sent Ministries. Each grade level will spend some time in the gym packaging food to help feed starving children. Volunteers are needed for this event, so please reach out to your child’s teacher if you are interested in helping. You can learn more about this here.

Donations Needed

We will need several items to help us accomplish our projects:

  • T-shirts – Any shape, condition, or size – these will be cut and used to make dog toys
  • 1.5-2 yard increments of fleece fabric – for making blankets for foster children
  • New or gently used books for grades Pre-K-5 – for Prairie Creek Elementary
  • Cake mix, disposable pans, canned frosting, candles, large or extra large gift bags – for “Birthdays in a Bag” for the food bank
