Welcome to the Wheatland Library! Below is information about checking out books.

• Students will visit the library for a lesson and check-out once per week.

• Students are allowed to check out two books at a time.  Student's Birthday Book Club books or books for an assigned class project are exceptions.

• Books may be checked out for a two week period and renewed once for an additional two weeks, so long as there are not any holds for the book.  

• There are no overdue fees, however, students will not be able to check out additional books until they are returned. 

• If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, the student will be responsible for paying to replace the book.  

The Wheatland Elementary Library Birthday Book Club is one in which you can celebrate your child’s birthday in a special way and help our library collection continue to grow. 

This year we are utilizing Bound to Stay Bound (BTSB) to help facilitate our donations to the birthday book club.  At the BTSB website, you will find a wish list of books that has been curated by Mrs. Platzer, Wheatland librarian, to meet the needs and wants of our school community.  You and your child can choose the book from the wish list they would like to donate to the school.  You will pay for the book through the BTSB website using a credit/debit card.  These books are quality, library bound editions and will be processed and shipped directly to our school library--free of charge.  100% of your donation goes to the purchase of library books. You can even add a personal donor plate.

When the books arrive at our school, the inside front cover of the book will have his or her name written on a bookplate and their picture (if allowed).  The birthday child also has the honor of being the first to check out the new book.  The kids love looking back at their past birthday books over the years at Wheatland.

Students in grades 3-5 are able to participate in the William Allen White Award program.  This is a Kansas state book award and the winner of the award is chosen by the students.  The award is in honor of William Allen White, a renowned newspaper editor, politician, and author.  Each year, books are nominated in grades 3-5 and grades 6-8.  The books must be published within the last two years.  The books are nominated by Kansas librarians and often include Newbery award winning books.  

At Wheatland, students in grades 3-5 can read the books and take an AR quiz.  Students must get at least a 70% or better on the AR quiz for it to count.  Students will be able to vote for the winning book in April.  Students must read at least two books to vote.  Students may read two past winning books as well.  

Students will earn the following prizes and are responsible for letting Mrs. Platzer, the librarian, know when they have finished a book and quiz:

2 books = bookmark and eraser

4 books = restaurant certificate

6 books = William Allen White Reward party in late April

Students that read all of the current year 3-5 William Allen White nominated books + 2 past winners, will be honored on the William Allen White Challenge Wall of Fame.
